Let’s Get Hygge is the theme for our first-ever virtual retreat. Hygge (pronounced hoog-uh) is a quality of coziness and comfort that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).
We were just hit with our first major snowfall of the season AND are still in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. As tempting as it may be to throw in the towel, I’m choosing to take the hygge high road.
And for those joining me in December, I’ll be taking you along for the ride! On November 1, each attendee will receive a link to a questionnaire regarding meal selection and delivery options for a personalized retreat package that will include:
- unboxing instructions
- a very special welcome gift
- a daily itinerary with Zoom craft room snacks/treats
- everything needed for our annual holiday party (dinner, dessert & gift-gaming details)
- DIY supplies & instructions for two crafting breakouts
- family treats to use at your discretion (i.e. bribes)
- and much, much more!
Here are a few things to consider before we gather in December:
- Location. You could partner with a retreat buddy with spouses/kids in one house and you/retreat buddy in the other. If you plan to craft on your own in your home, you could takeover a child’s bedroom while they attend a “sleepover” in another room/area of the house. Or you could commandeer the basement, dining room, or another area of the house – declaring it “off limits” between certain hours.
- Workspace. If you plan to work in an area other than your dining room table, you will need to come up with an alternative. An adjustable laptop table like THIS ONE would work well if you are limited on space. Another slightly larger alternative is THIS ONE (I have purchased several and have found them to be quite handy).
- Lighting. It will be important to assess your craft area after the sun goes down to make sure you have enough light to work. (After all, the best time to work might be after everyone has gone to bed!) I supplement my own workspace with inexpensive lamps like THIS ONE.
You might also find it helpful, if Zoom crafting by tablet or smartphone, to pick up a stand similar to THIS ONE. If Zoom crafting by computer or laptop, you may find it best to place it smack dab in the middle of your workspace (just to the right or left of you OR or place it on a separate table in front of you).
Headphones or earbuds (wireless or with an extension cable) can greatly enhance the audio experience. [If you’re looking for an affordable set of wireless earbuds, I recommend THIS ONE. Simple extension cables can be found at Best Buy or Amazon for under $10.] For those new to Zoom, we will virtually gather for a test run on Sunday, November 29 at 7:00 pm.
I can’t wait to see all of you soon!
